Hi. My name is Ryan James Korkowski. My surname can be found in Part Two of this article.
I live in a small town in the state of Minnesota (USA), and have been quite interested in learning more about my genealogical histories as of late…
I am thankful that I ultimately ended up finding this article, and am eager to learn more about the sources where the information about my surname was acquired from….
I do not speak the language, and thusly, unfortunately I can’t figure out what the stated source refers to…in fact, the entire excerpt has raised several questions…
Here is the translated version of the Korkowski excerpt: (including the previous surname for reference)
KORKOWICZ: Jan Korkowicz 1640, LBŁ 1680; surname created from ap. cork (after: NP1, p. 440) with the control -owicz.
KORKOWSKI: Michał Korkowski 1619, LBŁ 1166; surname created from Lt. Korkowicz control – (ow) ski.
-Firstly, which word does the abbreviated „ap.” denote? Does the reference to the cork infer my ancestors’ held a certain thirst for spirits in a bottle? In other words, does it hint at alcoholism?
Could you please let me know which publication NP1 is? I’m quite curious to read the original excerpt on page 440…..
Was 1619 the year that the surname was first noted? What does LBL stand for? Is 1166 a year?
And lastly, it states the surname was created from (lieutenant?) Korkowicz….. doesn’t it actually predate that surname? (1640>1619)
My apologies for asking so many questions in your comments section, we Americans tend to be a little slow! Do feel free to delete/not publish this comment if it takes up to much real estate….
Please email me with any answers you are able to provide. I am quite interested in hearing the rest of the story!
I’d also be extremely grateful if you could possibly send me links to any family genealogy records relating to the Korkowski lineage you might be able to find…the furthest back I’ve been able to trace my line with records thus far is around 1760 or so….I’d gladly share any details with you if you would so desire!
Thank you so very much for the wonderful work you are accomplishing in the name of Lomza! I can only imagine what Michal Korkowski would think about his namesake still flourishing nearly four centuries later! ryankorkowski@gmail.com
Sir,
I just read your comment. I am happy to answer your questions:
1. In the book of birth records of the parish of Łomża (today the cathedral parish) there appears Michał Korkowski 1619, LBŁ (abbreviation of the act name) 1166 (baptism certificate number);
2. Surname KORKOWICZ: Jan Korkowicz 1640, LBŁ 1680; it could also identify the Korkowski family, because in the 17th century there was still a lack of stability in the forms of surnames they used.
3. Notation: created from ap. cork (after: NP1 (abbreviation: K. Rymut, Names of Poles, vol. 1.), p. 440) with the formant -owicz – means that the surname comes from a common name.
4. Maybe the bearers of this surname were involved in, for example, the wine trade … Today it is difficult to define the original motivation of this surname.
5. It is significant that the name Korkowski is not confirmed in the Łomża sources in later centuries.
Greetings

Przeglądałam nazwiska Łomżan z X IX wieku i nie znalazłam nazwiska Szponka.
Proszę o odpowiedź.
Pozdrawiam
